Gridraven proves 1.7°C conductor temperature accuracy in Portugal

E-REDES in Portugal completed a year-long assessment of Dynamic Line Rating solutions and published its findings in CIRED conference proceedings in June 2026. The assessment included a validation of Gridraven’s dynamic line ratings against conductor temperature measurements on a 60 kV distribution overhead line.

Gridraven proves 1.7°C conductor temperature accuracy in Portugal

Gridraven’s estimated conductor temperature was within 1.7°C (mean absolute error) during the study period. The maximum recorded error was 8°C. This is a direct validation of Gridraven’s weather forecast accuracy in the field.

The comparison between estimated and measured conductor temperatures demonstrates that sensorless solutions are able to reproduce the conductor’s temperature with acceptable accuracy, with mean temperature errors typically below 2 °C and isolated maximum errors that remain within tolerable operational margins.

Gridraven provides hyper-local weather forecasts for every span of the overhead line. It is possible to calculate the expected conductor temperature based on weather conditions and line loading. The accuracy of weather forecasts is validated if the estimated temperature agrees with measurement.

The project demonstrated the reliability of software-only Dynamic Line Ratings and the benefit in the form of additional capacity latent in the network:

“DLR consistently enabled additional capacity when compared to static ratings, with reported gains typically exceeding 30% and, in some cases, approaching 40–50% under favourable conditions.”

This extra capacity is beneficial to the power system, by facilitating the flexible interconnection of a renewable plant on a constrained line and reducing curtailment.
